Venmo fee calculator

Enter a price to see what a Venmo business profile, a personal goods-and-services payment or an instant transfer leaves — and why Venmo is a wallet, not a checkout.

Venmo is a wallet with a business profile, not a storefront. It does not deliver files or handle tax, and it is US-only.

Business profile or personal account?

Venmo has three rates that are easy to confuse. The one that matters for a seller is the business profile: 1.9% + $0.10 per payment of $1 or more. It is US-only, subject to approval, and the fee is deducted from the payment rather than added to the buyer’s total.

A personal profile is for personal payments. If the sender tags a payment as goods and services, Venmo charges the recipient 2.99% on the fees page (the help article’s example implies 2%; see the note below). Venmo’s terms say commercial transactions need a business profile or a tagged purchase, so a personal account is not a way around the business rate.

The third rate is Venmo through PayPal or Braintree: 3.49% + $0.49 in the US. That is a PayPal acceptance product, not the Venmo business-profile rate. It is on the PayPal fee calculator as the Venmo method. The calculator on this page does not use it.

Every Venmo fee, in one table

The table shows the lines that matter for a sale. Tap to Pay and credit-card sending are listed but not modelled. The calculator is US-only, so there is no UK column.

Venmo fees at common prices

A business-profile sale and a personal goods-and-services sale at the same price. The business rate is lower because the profile is approved for selling; the personal rate is the price of using a personal account for a tagged purchase.

$100.00$2.00$98.00$2.99$97.01

To receive $100 after the business-profile fee, charge $102.04. At $10 with an instant transfer, the business fee is $0.29 and the transfer fee is the $0.25 minimum, so $9.46 reaches you.

The instant transfer fee

A standard transfer to a linked bank account is free. An instant transfer is 1.75%, with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 maximum. At $10 the minimum applies, so the fee is $0.25. At $2,000, 1.75% would be $35, so the cap applies and the fee is $25.

Switch on “Instant transfer” in the calculator to see it as a separate line. The reverse mode is disabled while it is on, because a capped fee cannot be solved with a single percentage.

Venmo vs PayPal vs Cash App

Venmo is a wallet with a business profile. PayPal is a full checkout with invoicing, subscriptions and buyer protection. Cash App is a payment app whose business rate is not published. They are not three versions of the same product.

ProductRateWhat it is for
Venmo business profile1.9% + $0.10Low-volume US sales to people who already use Venmo.
PayPal Checkout3.49% + $0.49A checkout with buyer protection, invoicing and subscriptions.
Cash App BusinessNot publishedA payment app; check the rate shown in your account.

See the Stripe vs PayPal comparison for the processor-level version, or the Cash App fee calculator for the third wallet.

Is Venmo good for selling digital products?

Not on its own. Venmo moves money; it does not host the file, deliver it, expire the link or handle sales tax. A buyer who receives a public file URL can forward it, and there is no download cap. That is fine for a one-off sale to a friend, and a poor fit for a product you are trying to sell repeatedly.

If your buyers already use Venmo, treat it as the payment step and solve delivery separately. Unlockable is one option: a paid link that delivers the file, can expire or be capped, and does not hand out a public address. See how to sell without a website.

What the calculator leaves out

Tax, chargebacks, account limits, business-profile eligibility, Venmo’s purchase protection terms, credit-card fees paid by the sender, Tap to Pay and the cost of a standard bank transfer (free) are not in the per-sale result. Those costs are real; they are left out because they depend on the account and the buyer, not on the price alone.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Venmo charge for a business payment?
An approved Venmo business profile pays 1.9% + $0.10 on each payment of $1 or more. On a $25 sale that is $0.58, leaving $24.42. Venmo deducts the fee from the payment; it is not added to the buyer’s total.
What is the Venmo goods and services fee?
Venmo’s fees page lists 2.99% when a payment to a personal profile is tagged as goods and services. Venmo’s own help example says a $100 purchase-tagged payment leaves $98, which implies 2%, not 2.99%. The calculator uses the 2.99% on the fees page and notes the discrepancy rather than pretending it is settled.
Should I use a business profile or a personal account?
Use a business profile if you are selling. Venmo’s terms say commercial transactions need a business profile or a payment tagged as a purchase; using a personal account for untagged business payments is not allowed. A business profile is US-only and subject to approval.
Is Venmo available in the UK?
No. Venmo is a US product. The calculator shows US dollars only and does not convert a US rate into sterling. If you sell from the UK, Venmo is not a route you can use for the sale.
Is Venmo cheaper than PayPal?
On the headline rate, a business profile at 1.9% + $0.10 is cheaper than PayPal Checkout at 3.49% + $0.49. But they are different products: Venmo does not deliver the file, cap the link, handle tax or provide a checkout. PayPal’s Venmo acceptance rate (3.49% + $0.49) is a third product again; it is not the business-profile rate.
What is the Venmo instant transfer fee?
1.75% of the amount transferred, with a minimum of $0.25 and a maximum of $25. On a $10 transfer the minimum applies, so the fee is $0.25; on a $2,000 transfer 1.75% would be $35, so the $25 cap applies. Standard bank transfers are free.
Does Venmo refund the seller fee?
No. Venmo says business profile fees are not refundable. A refund you issue is separate from the fee Venmo already took on the original payment.
Can I sell digital products with Venmo?
You can receive a payment, but Venmo does not deliver the file, expire the link or handle sales tax. A buyer who receives a public file link can forward it. Venmo works for a low-volume US audience that already pays by Venmo; it is not a replacement for a paid link with access control.
Why is Tap to Pay not in the calculator?
Venmo’s fees page lists 2.29% + $0.09 for Tap to Pay; its help article lists 2.29% + $0.10. The company’s own pages disagree, so the calculator leaves the method out rather than choosing a number. If you use Tap to Pay, check the rate shown in your app.
What does the reverse mode do?
It solves for the price that leaves a target after fees. At the business-profile rate, to receive $100 you charge $102.04. The result is rounded up to the cent, so the net is never a penny short.
