Comparison
Unlockable vs Gumroad
The established digital-product store, with tax handled for you.
What each one costs
Unlockable
20% total
20% of your list price. The buyer pays a 10% privacy & security fee on top, and card processing is covered by us, so £40 of content pays you £36.
- Platform fee
- 10% creator-side + 10% buyer-side
- Card processing
- Covered by Unlockable
Gumroad
10% + $0.50 direct
10% + $0.50 per sale through your own links, plus processing, and 30% on sales Gumroad’s marketplace finds for you. It is a merchant of record, so it handles sales tax.
- Platform fee
- 10% + $0.50 direct, 30% via Discover
- Card processing
- Additional
On Unlockable a £40.00 sale pays you £36.00: the buyer covers the privacy & security fee, and card processing comes out of our share. Platform fee and processing are shown separately for Gumroad because a percentage that excludes processing is not comparable to one that includes it.
When Gumroad is the better choice
Gumroad is a merchant of record, which means it collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide — from 1 January 2025 it handles all of that for you. We do not: on Unlockable you are the seller and the tax position is yours. If cross-border tax compliance is the thing you most want to avoid, that single difference is worth more than the fee gap. It also has a marketplace that can bring you buyers you did not have to find.
When Unlockable is the better choice
Gumroad is a store with a checkout; Unlockable is a link with a checkout. If you want a product page, a library and someone else dealing with tax, Gumroad is the more complete business tool. If you want to send one link in a DM and be paid, there is less to set up here — and no 30% marketplace tier, because we have no marketplace to take it.
- You keep £36.00 on a £40.00 sale — processing is our cost, not yours
- The buyer pays the fee, so your listed price is what you intended to charge
- No monthly fee and no membership: nothing is charged until something sells
- Expiring links, view caps and unlock caps, for a drop rather than a download
- A voice note on the link, so a sale arrives with a person attached

Where these figures come from
Gumroad’s fees were read from gumroad.com/pricing on 26 September 2026. Pricing changes without notice, so check the source before making a decision on it. Unlockable’s own figures are our published 10% creator-side and 10% buyer-side fee, and Stripe’s UK card rate.
