How to Sell Digital Products on Etsy
List a digital download on Etsy, understand its fees and file limits, and compare what you keep with selling direct through your own paid link.

Etsy is a marketplace with its own search traffic, and listing a digital download takes one listing and up to five files. It is the right first move if nobody knows you yet. It is a worse deal if you already have an audience, because you pay marketplace fees and the customer relationship belongs to Etsy.
The short version
- Etsy charges a listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing; the exact total depends on your country and whether an Offsite Ad brought the sale.
- Digital listings allow up to five files, 20 MB each, with no variations and no way to revoke access after purchase except cancelling the order.
- On a £10 sale, Etsy's variable fees can be lower than Unlockable's 20%. The case for selling direct is ownership and control, not always a lower fee.
- Etsy is the better choice when you have no audience and need its search traffic.
- Selling direct is better when you already have followers, an email list or a community, and want to keep the customer.
What is Etsy, and why do digital sellers use it?
Etsy is a marketplace where individual sellers list products and buyers search for them. For a digital seller, the product is the search traffic: people arrive looking for a Canva template, a preset pack or a printable, and Etsy's search and categories put your listing in front of them. That is something a payment link cannot do. The templates guide covers what those products sell for; this page covers Etsy's side of the transaction.
The trade is that you are selling inside someone else's shop. Etsy sets the checkout, the fees and the rules, and it can remove a listing or suspend an account if it believes you have broken them.
How do you list a digital download on Etsy?
The short version: open a shop, choose Digital files, upload the files, fill in the listing and publish. The detail matters more than the sequence, because Etsy's digital rules are narrower than they look.
Open your Etsy shop
Register as a seller and complete the shop setup. Etsy may charge a one-time set-up fee, which is shown during onboarding; it is not always applied. See Etsy's guide to opening a shop.
Create a listing and choose Digital files
In Shop Manager, go to Listings → Add a listing. Under What type of item is it?, choose Digital files. Then choose Instant download for a ready-made file, or Made to order if you will send a custom file after the sale.
Upload the files
An instant download allows up to five files, with a maximum of 20 MB per file. Supported types include PDF, ZIP, JPEG, PNG, MP3, MP4, EPUB, DOC, RTF and STL. File names are limited to 70 characters and are visible to the buyer, so name them before uploading. Etsy's digital listing guide lists the full set and the limits.
Write the listing for search
The title can be up to 140 characters. You can add up to 13 tags. Put the thing the buyer would type in the title — "Canva Instagram template", "Lightroom preset pack" — and use the description for what is included, what software it needs and what the buyer receives.
Set the price, returns policy and publish
Set a price and quantity, choose your returns policy, and publish. A new listing can take up to 48 hours to appear in Etsy search. There are no variations for digital items, so two versions at two prices need two listings.
Check what the buyer actually gets
After purchase, the buyer downloads the files immediately from their Etsy downloads page. You cannot swap the file for a different one after purchase, and the only way to revoke access is to cancel the order. That is a different model from an expiring link, which is designed to close access after a date or an unlock cap.
What are Etsy's fees for digital items?
Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy lists the fees below. The figures are from the archived copy dated 10 October 2026, checked on 19 October 2026; the live page is the authority if anything has changed.
| Fee | What it applies to | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | Each item listed; listings auto-renew every four months | $0.20 per listing |
| Transaction fee | The listing price plus shipping and gift wrapping | 6.5% |
| Payment processing (UK) | The total sale amount, including tax and shipping | 4% + £0.20 per order |
| Offsite Ads | Orders attributed to Etsy's offsite advertising within 30 days of a click | 15% if your shop made under $10,000 in the prior 365 days; 12% at or above $10,000; capped at $100 per order |
| Digital VAT | Digital items delivered by automatic download in countries where Etsy is required to collect it | Etsy collects and remits it; the rate depends on the buyer's location |
Two details are easy to miss. First, the listing fee is charged whether or not the item sells, and it renews automatically every four months unless you turn automatic renewals off. Second, Offsite Ads is optional only while your shop is under the $10,000 threshold; once you cross it, participation is required for the lifetime of the shop, at 12%.
What does a £10 sale actually pay you on Etsy?
Take a £10 digital sale with no shipping and no Offsite Ad. The transaction fee is 6.5% of £10, or £0.65. UK payment processing is 4% of £10 plus £0.20, or £0.60. That leaves £8.75 before the listing fee, which is charged per listing rather than per sale.
| Etsy | Unlockable | |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer pays | £10 | £11 (the buyer covers the 10% privacy & security fee) |
| Platform / transaction fee | £0.65 (6.5%) | £2 total (10% creator-side + 10% buyer-side) |
| Card processing | £0.60 (4% + £0.20) | Covered by Unlockable |
| You keep | £8.75 before the $0.20 listing fee | £8.00 |
| If a 15% Offsite Ad brought the sale | £7.25 | £8.00 |
| Who owns the customer | Etsy's marketplace | You |
This is the part most comparison pages skip: Etsy is cheaper on variable fees for this sale. Unlockable's 20% is a higher percentage than Etsy's 6.5% plus 4% plus 20p, even after the listing fee is counted. If your only question is "which one leaves more in my account on a £10 sale", Etsy often wins.
The case for selling direct is different. On Unlockable the buyer pays you through a link you control, the customer is yours, and the price is not competing with a page of similar listings. That is worth something, but it is not a fee saving, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
When is Etsy the better choice?
Etsy is the better choice when distribution is the problem. Three cases:
- You have no audience yet. Etsy's search results are the audience. A payment link sent to nobody sells nothing.
- The buyer is already searching on Etsy. Someone typing "Canva template" into Etsy has purchase intent. Someone typing it into Google may be looking for a free tutorial.
- You want marketplace trust and checkout. Etsy is familiar to buyers, and it handles the payment flow. For a first sale to a stranger, that reduces friction.
Etsy also collects and remits VAT on digital items in some jurisdictions, as set out in its fees policy. That is a real administrative advantage if cross-border digital VAT is the thing you most want to avoid — but check the rule for your own situation rather than assuming it applies everywhere.
When is selling direct better?
Selling direct is better when the relationship is the asset. If you already have followers, an email list or a community, sending them to Etsy means paying a marketplace to intermediate a sale you could have made yourself.
It is also better when:
- You want the buyer's email address and the ability to sell them the next thing.
- You need expiring or capped links, which Etsy's instant downloads do not offer. The guide to stopping link sharing explains what those controls do and do not protect.
- Your product is larger than Etsy's five-files-at-20-MB limit, or needs a file type Etsy does not accept. The delivery guide covers the handoff.
- You sell a high-priced product where the marketplace's search traffic is not worth the fee and the loss of control.
The honest caveat: a direct link does not bring buyers. If nobody knows you, a link is a checkout with no shop window. That is why the order is usually Etsy first for discovery, then direct once you have an audience — not the other way round. If you are starting from zero, the guide to selling without a website covers the mechanics of a link-only launch.
What are Etsy's rules and risks for digital items?
Intellectual property. Etsy's IP policy says sellers are responsible for ensuring they have the rights to their content. Etsy removes material when it receives a compliant infringement report, and repeat infringement can lead to termination of selling privileges. If you sell templates built with someone else's artwork, fonts or characters, that is the risk to understand before you list. Read Etsy's Intellectual Property Policy.
File limits. Five files, 20 MB each, no variations, and a fixed list of supported formats. A video course or a large asset pack will not fit as one listing. Splitting it across listings is possible, but it turns one product into several and complicates delivery.
Instant delivery is permanent by default. The buyer downloads immediately, and cancelling the order is the only way to revoke access. There is no expiring link and no unlock cap. If your product depends on scarcity or a closing window, Etsy's instant download is the wrong delivery mechanism.
Account and listing risk. Etsy can remove a listing or suspend a shop if it believes the listing or the account breaks its policies. A marketplace account is rented distribution, not an asset you own.
Fee changes. Etsy can change its fees. The figures above are dated for that reason; check the fees page before you price a product, and use the pricing guide to work out the price you actually need.
Frequently asked questions
How many digital files can I upload to an Etsy listing?
Five files, with a maximum of 20 MB per file. The supported types include PDF, ZIP, JPEG, PNG, MP3, MP4, EPUB and DOC. If your product is bigger than that, you need a different delivery method or a split listing.
Does Etsy charge a fee if nothing sells?
The listing fee is charged when you publish or renew a listing, whether or not it sells. The 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing apply only when a sale happens. Auto-renewal means an unsold listing can still cost $0.20 every four months.
Can I sell Canva templates on Etsy?
You can list a template you have the right to sell, but Canva's licence rules still apply to the assets you use. The Canva template guide covers the licence question and the build; the templates guide covers what the finished product sells for, and this page is about the Etsy listing and its fees.
Do Etsy digital downloads expire?
No. The buyer keeps access to the files, and the only way to revoke it is to cancel the order. If you want a link that expires or closes after a set number of unlocks, Etsy's instant download is not that product.
Is Etsy or Unlockable cheaper?
On a £10 sale, Etsy's variable fees are lower: £8.75 kept before the listing fee, against £8.00 on Unlockable. Add a 15% Offsite Ad and Etsy drops to £7.25. The direct link is not cheaper; it is the option where you keep the customer and control the delivery.
Can I sell digital products on Etsy without an audience?
Yes — that is the main reason to use it. Etsy's search traffic does the finding. The trade is that you are competing inside a marketplace, paying its fees and following its rules, and the buyer relationship stays with Etsy.
