What you package

How you would deliver it

  1. 1

Sell the implementation with its deployment documentation as one collection.

  2. 2

Include working configuration examples, which is the first thing a buyer needs and the last thing most repositories provide.

  3. 3

Offer a documented reference implementation at one price and a support arrangement separately.

  4. 4

Version against the protocol and state which revision you built for.

Why it works for MCP developers

Developer tooling in a fast-moving protocol has a specific commercial shape: the specification is public, so the knowledge is not scarce, but a working implementation with deployment documentation is. The gap between "this is possible" and "this runs in production with authentication handled" is where a weekend disappears, and that gap is the product. It is also the reason the buyer can price their own time against it accurately.

What the buyer is really assessing is whether you have hit the problems they are about to hit. Configuration examples, transport and auth decisions, failure modes and a test suite are the evidence. A source dump does not carry that, which is why a documented implementation sells for several times what the same code does as a bare repository.

The constraint is protocol velocity. Anything built against a moving specification has a shelf life measured in months, so an unspecified compatibility claim is less credible than a dated one with a stated maintenance period. Developers expect versioning from their own work, and they extend the same expectation to what they buy.

£19

Configuration and pattern pack

What these sell for: £19 for configs, £59 for a production server with deployment docs. Developers price their own weekend accurately.

On a sale the buyer covers the privacy & security fee, and card processing comes out of our share — so a £59 price pays you £47.20. See the full split.

MCP developers questions

The protocol is open and examples are free. What is being sold?

The working implementation and the deployment knowledge. Open specifications tell you what is possible; they rarely tell you how to handle authentication, transport choice or the failure modes in production. A reference implementation that already runs, with the deployment notes written down, saves a developer the part of the work that is genuinely tedious.

How do I price against free repositories?

On time saved rather than lines of code, and on what is included beyond the source — configuration examples, deployment documentation, a test suite. A repository that requires a weekend of assembly is not a substitute for an implementation that runs on the first attempt, and developers price their own time accurately.

The specification is moving. How do I sell for it?

State the protocol revision you built against, and maintain the code. This is a fast-moving area, so the honest product is a dated implementation with a stated support period. Buyers in this category expect versioning, and they are more deterred by an unspecified compatibility claim than by a dated one.
