Gumroad is a storefront and marketplace for digital products. Its fees, Discover rate, tax handling and payouts, plus when another platform fits better.

Gumroad is a storefront and marketplace for digital products: you create a product page, Gumroad takes the payment and delivers the file, and it takes a cut of each sale. It is useful when you want a shop and a marketplace in one place. It is more machinery than you need if you only want to send one paid link.
The short version
- Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per direct sale, 30% on sales its Discover marketplace finds, and processing is additional.
- It has been a merchant of record since 1 January 2025, so it handles sales tax and VAT on your sales.
- It is an established company, founded in 2011, with a storefront, memberships and a marketplace.
- It is a better choice than a link when you want a shop, tax handled for you or Discover traffic.
- It is a worse choice when you already have an audience and want to keep the customer relationship and the simplest possible checkout.
What is Gumroad?
Gumroad is an online storefront and marketplace for creators selling digital products. You create a product page, set a price, and Gumroad handles checkout, file delivery and payouts. Buyers can also browse Gumroad's Discover marketplace, where the platform promotes products to people who did not arrive with your link.
The company was founded in 2011 by Sahil Lavingia and is based in San Francisco. It has been operating for long enough that "is Gumroad legit?" is a fair question with a boring answer: it is an established business, not a new app with a checkout page. That does not mean your product will sell; it means the platform is real.
Gumroad's own pricing page describes its users as digital artists, writers, musicians and "SaaS creators", and lists ebooks, courses, tutorials and memberships among the things you can sell. Physical goods are not permitted; the pricing FAQ points to a prohibited-items list for the rest.
How much does Gumroad charge?
Gumroad's pricing page, checked in October 2026, is unusually direct. There is no monthly fee. It charges a percentage plus a fixed amount on direct sales, and a higher percentage on sales that come through Discover.
| Fee | What it applies to | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Direct sale | Sales through your profile or a direct link | 10% + $0.50 per transaction |
| Discover sale | New customers who find and buy through Gumroad's marketplace | 30% per transaction |
| Payment processing | Additional to the platform fee | Varies by method and country |
| Monthly fee | None | $0 |
The pricing page states the headline rates. src/lib/competitors.ts records
processing as additional, and the fixed $0.50 is charged in US dollars, so the
sterling cost depends on the exchange rate at the time.
What does a £10 sale leave?
This is illustrative. It uses a £10 list price, a $0.50 fixed fee converted at an assumed £1 = $1.25, and no payment-processing charge because the rate depends on the buyer's method and your country.
| Gumroad direct | Gumroad Discover | Unlockable | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buyer pays | £10 | £10 | £11 (10% privacy & security fee added) |
| Platform fee | £1.00 + about £0.40 | £3.00 | £2.00 total |
| Processing | Additional | Additional | Covered by Unlockable |
| You keep before processing | about £8.60 | £7.00 | £8.00 |
On a direct sale, Gumroad's headline is slightly better than Unlockable's 20% before processing. Add processing and the gap narrows or reverses. On a Discover sale, the 30% fee is clearly higher. The honest conclusion is not "Gumroad is expensive" or "Unlockable is cheaper"; it is that the fixed fee and the Discover rate change the answer at different prices.
Gumroad's tax position is the bigger difference. Since 1 January 2025 it has been the merchant of record, which means it collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide on your sales. On Unlockable you are the seller and the tax position is yours. If cross-border tax is the thing you most want to avoid, that is worth more than a percentage point on a £10 sale. The pricing guide covers how to work the fee into your price rather than absorbing it.
Is Gumroad safe and legit?
Gumroad is a real, established company, founded in 2011. It acts as the merchant of record, handles sales tax, and pays creators out by direct deposit or PayPal depending on the country, as its pricing FAQ says. The buyer pays through Gumroad's checkout; the creator is paid from Gumroad.
"Legit" and "safe" are different questions. For a buyer, the relevant question is whether the checkout is Gumroad's and whether the product is as described. For a creator, the relevant questions are whether payouts arrive and whether the platform can change the rules. Gumroad publishes a payout-delays help page, which is a useful reminder that a sale is not the same as cleared funds.
No platform can guarantee sales, and no review can promise that a marketplace will keep its current fees. Check the pricing page and the terms before you build a business on any of them.
What is Gumroad good at?
It is a complete shop, not just a checkout. You get a product page, a library, order management and the ability to sell memberships, courses and tutorials. If you want a place that looks like a shop rather than a single payment link, Gumroad does that without you building a site. If your product is a template, the templates guide covers the packaging and pricing side.
It handles tax. As merchant of record, it collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide. That is a genuine operational advantage, and the reason many creators choose it over a cheaper-looking payment link.
Discover can bring buyers. The 30% fee is high, but it buys distribution you would otherwise have to create. For a creator with no audience, a marketplace that promotes products is doing a job a link cannot.
It is established. Buyers recognise the checkout, and the platform has been running since 2011. That reduces the "is this a scam?" friction for a first sale.
Where does Gumroad fall short?
The Discover fee is 30%. That is three times the direct rate. It may still be worth it for a buyer you would never have reached, but it is not a cheap channel.
The fixed $0.50 hurts low-priced products. On a £3 download, 10% is 30p and the fixed fee is a much larger share. Gumroad's model works better at £15–£50 than at £3.
Processing is additional. The headline is not the all-in cost. The final amount depends on the buyer's payment method and your country, so the only reliable number is the one in your own payout statement.
It is a marketplace with rules. Gumroad sets the prohibited-items list, can change its fees, and can delay a payout while it reviews an account. Those are normal marketplace risks, but they are risks a direct link does not have.
It is more machinery than a single link. If you have one file and an audience that already follows you, a storefront, a product library and a marketplace are features you are paying for and not using.
Gumroad vs alternatives
The right comparison depends on what you want the platform to do. This table links to the pages that compare each option properly, rather than repeating them here.
| If you want | Consider | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|
| A storefront, marketplace and tax handled | Gumroad | Gumroad alternatives |
| Recurring memberships and tiers | Patreon | Patreon alternatives |
| Tips plus a simple shop | Ko-fi | Ko-fi alternatives |
| A flat monthly fee, courses and community | Stan | Stan Store alternatives |
| One link, no storefront, no membership | Unlockable | Gumroad alternatives |
The short version: choose Gumroad if you want a shop and someone else to handle tax. Choose a link if you want the shortest path from a file to a payment and you already have the audience. The guide to selling without a website covers what that link-only setup looks like in practice.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gumroad free?
There is no monthly fee. Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 on direct sales and 30% on Discover sales, with payment processing additional. You pay when you sell, not to open an account.
How much does Gumroad take per sale?
10% + $0.50 on a direct sale, and 30% on a sale Discover finds. Processing is additional. On a £10 direct sale that is about £1.40 before processing; on a Discover sale it is £3.00.
Is Gumroad safe for buyers?
Gumroad processes the payment through its own checkout and acts as merchant of record. Buyers should still check the product description and the creator's terms. No marketplace can guarantee that every product is as described.
Does Gumroad handle VAT and sales tax?
Yes, since 1 January 2025 it has been the merchant of record and handles sales tax collection and remittance worldwide on sales through Gumroad. That is a different position from a payment link, where the seller is responsible.
Can I sell physical products on Gumroad?
No. Gumroad's pricing FAQ says physical goods are outside what it supports; it is built for digital products, courses, memberships and similar. A physical product needs a different platform or your own fulfilment.
Do I need an audience to sell on Gumroad?
Not necessarily, because Discover can surface products to new buyers. But Discover takes 30%, and it is not a guarantee of traffic. If you already have an audience, a direct link keeps more of each sale and the customer relationship.
