What you can sell

How you would use Unlockable

  1. 1

Sell the deleted chapter as a link to the readers who finished the book.

  2. 2

Serialise a story and expire each part, so the next one is an event.

  3. 3

Bundle the story with your notes on writing it as a collection.

  4. 4

Send it to your newsletter list, who already read you.

Why it works for writers

Writers are unusually badly served by how publishing works. The book takes years and pays twice a year; the newsletter is free by convention; and the material that gets cut along the way — the deleted chapter, the story that did not fit the collection — has no route to the readers who would most want it.

Serialisation is the natural shape here, and it is the one form writers rarely use because there has been nowhere to do it. Publishing a story in parts, each as its own link and each expiring when the next arrives, turns one piece of work into a run of small purchases from readers who are already following. A deleted chapter is the cheapest possible addition, sold to people who finished the book and wanted more of it.

What it will not do is find readers. The audience has to exist first, and this works best for writers who already have one — a newsletter list, a following, or readers of a previous book.

What these sell for: Short pieces are £3–£6. Serialisation works because each instalment is small; asking £15 for part one of eight ends the series.

On a sale the buyer covers the privacy & security fee, and card processing comes out of our share — so a £4 price pays you £3.20. See the full split.

Writers questions

Can I serialise a story and charge per part?

Yes. Publish each instalment as its own link, and expire the previous one if you want each part to be an event.

Is it worth selling a deleted chapter?

It is one of the cheapest products a writer owns. The readers who finished the book are the audience, and the material already exists.

Does this conflict with my publisher or newsletter?

It is usually additive — bonus and deleted material that was not part of any contract. Check your own agreement, since that is a question only you can answer.
