How you would use Unlockable
- 1
Upload the model with a short note on what each input does β a model nobody can drive is a spreadsheet, not a product.
- 2
Sell the completed version and a blank template separately at different prices.
- 3
Bundle the model with a walkthrough video for the buyers who want the reasoning.
- 4
Price on the decision it supports rather than on the formulas it contains.
Why it works for spreadsheets and models
A spreadsheet looks like the least valuable thing a person can sell, and it is frequently the opposite. What a buyer lacks is not the ability to build a spreadsheet, it is confidence in the assumptions and the structure β which columns matter, how the formulas should chain, what a sensible model looks like. A working model someone else has already debugged is worth real money to a business, which is why financial models regularly sell for more than courses.
Usability drives the price more than complexity does. A model with colour-coded inputs, protected formulas, a short instruction block and one worked example can be driven by a stranger; a more sophisticated model that nobody can navigate will generate support questions that exceed the purchase price. The documentation is not a nicety here, it is the difference between a product and a liability.
What it will not do is make the buyer's decisions for them. A model shows the consequence of an assumption, not whether the assumption is right, and buyers who expect the second will be disappointed. Saying plainly that it is a tool for testing assumptions rather than a source of them sets the right expectation and reduces the arguments.

Spreadsheets and models questions
Spreadsheets are easy to copy. Why pay?
For the structure and the assumptions. Anyone can build a spreadsheet; very few people build one whose inputs are labelled, whose formulas survive a change, and whose assumptions are visible rather than buried in cell references. Buyers are paying for a model someone else has already debugged, which is a meaningful saving on a task most people do badly.
How do I make a model usable by someone else?
Assume nothing. Colour-code the input cells, protect the formula cells, add a short instruction block, and include one worked example with real numbers. A model that a buyer cannot drive generates support questions that quickly exceed what you were paid, and it is the single most common reason spreadsheet products get refunded.
Can I sell a model built in Excel to someone using Sheets?
Usually with caveats, and it is worth stating them. Most formulas convert cleanly, but pivot tables, macros and some functions behave differently or not at all. Saying which platform the model was built and tested on avoids the buyer discovering the incompatibility themselves after paying.
